Reported that Whitney died shortly after suffering severe brain trauma from a hit-and-run accident at 3:15 a.m. on the previous Sunday morning.  Eric Joseph Leeman, 20, also a student, was arrested at his home near the SDSU campus. Leeman's roommates told detectives that he was at a party the night of the accident and was a frequent drinker.

Detectives Thursday arrested Eric Joseph Leeman in a hit-and-run crash that fatally injured a 19-year-old coed in the College area last weekend.   The victim was crossing Montezuma Road with four companions when Leeman's sedan struck her about 3:15 a.m. Sunday. The Leeman did not stop.  Leeman claimed that he thought he'd struck an animal, possibly a raccoon.  A roommate reported that  Leeman had been to a party in the hours prior to the accident.

Eric Joseph Leeman pleaded guilty Aug. 23 to gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, admitted to a hit-and-run allegation and was sentenced Tuesday to 11 years in state prison.  Leeman had a DUI conviction in juvenile court when he was 17.  Witnesses testified at a preliminary hearing in March that Leeman was drunk at a party the night before he struck and killed Young.
