State police are investigating a one-car crash in the Adirondacks that killed a 19-year-old college student early Tuesday morning.

The crash happened shortly after 3 a.m. on Route 86 in Franklin County near Paul Smiths, 125 miles north of Albany. Troopers at Ray Brook said the 1997 Toyota pickup truck went off the road and struck a culvert and trees, and then overturned.

The victim was identified as 19-year-old Stephen Welch of Poultney, Vermont. Troopers said he was a student at Paul Smith's College.

The Jaws of Life was used to get the Welch out of the vehicle. He was alone in the truck. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Paul Smith's Mourns the Death of Stephen Welch and Joshua Rau -

Paul Smith’s College, Paul Smiths, N.Y. — A Message from President Mills.

The entire College community mourns the loss of two members of our community as well as a visitor to our campus. Stephen Welch, an Outdoor Recreation major from Poultney, Vermont died in an automobile accident on January 29; Joshua Rau, a Natural Resource Science major from Emmaus, Pennsylvania, and Kristine Guest, a student at Quinnipiac University, were fatally injured in a snowmobile accident on February 6.

We will continue to visit students in the Residence Halls to share thoughts about these tragic losses. Funeral arrangements for Josh and Kristine will be posted when they are finalized. Counseling is available in Pickett Hall (Room 103) for anyone who needs assistance.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of Stephen, Josh and Kristine at this very difficult time.

I ask all of you to take some time to reflect on the recent tragedies we have experienced and possibly suggest ways that we, as a community, can work together to insure that we do all that is possible to prevent further loss.

Thank you.
