Publication reflected on Lance's death and the overall alcohol culture on campuses and its consequences.   A summary of what appears follows:

"Lance Strickland never got to see the best of what Oregon State University offered, but he sure saw the worst of it. The 18-year-old visitor from Joseph died last month after a drinking binge in a dorm."

"Nationwide, nearly half of college students surveyed admit to binge drinking -- classified as five or more consecutive drinks for men, four for women. The number of students who say they have driven drunk rose to nearly 3 million. About 1,700 students die yearly from alcohol poisoning, falls, drunken driving and related causes, according to the most recent figures available from Harvard University and the National Institutes of Health. Lance Strickland, a weekend guest from northeastern Oregon, now joins that list."
