"Police tell the Lansing State Journal Robert Atherton was drinking with friends in an apartment in the Cedar Village area early Saturday when he became aggressive. They say the group he was with restrained him for several minutes, then realized he had become motionless and wasn't breathing. The group then called 911."

Police investigate student death, await autopsy results

Reports that "East Lansing police Capt. Tom Johnstone said Atherton became aggressive with friends at an apartment on the 200 block of River Street and was restrained. Friends then called 911 at about 12:35 a.m. after discovering Atherton motionless and not breathing."

"The father of a Michigan State University senior who died after he stopped breathing at an off-campus gathering early Saturday said Monday his son's death was an accident. "It was friends with friends, and it was an accident," said Robert Atherton's father, Bryan Atherton of Shelby Township.  They were messing around, he said, and "accidents happen -- that's all it was.""
