1 student dead, 1 hospitalized after crashBy Abby Lubbers , Thea Neal Reports that at about 1:30 a.m., Joe Barton junior Melissa Rumrill, were riding in the same car which was part of a three-car crash. Barton, 20, was pronounced dead the hospital following the accident. "“They were both drinking — definitely heavily enough — a half gallon between the two of them,” said Chris Bender, a physiology junior, who was friends with both victims and Barton’s roommate." MSU student to stand trial
in fatal crash Reported that a judge that Michigan State junior Melissa Rumrill will stand trial on one count of drunken driving causing death and two counts of drunken driving causing serious injury. She faces up to 15 years in prison. A witness said Rumrill and Joe Barton drank heavily at a party at the home of a fellow student. They were drinking lime- and pomegranate-flavored vodka. Another witness said Rumrill's speech that night was slurred and that she described herself as "a blackout drunk.
