An 18-year-old passenger was injured. Investigators believe that alcohol played a role in the accident. "Dear FGCU Students, Faculty and Staff, I am saddened to inform you that FGCU student Mary Taaffe died as a result of injuries suffered in a single-car accident early this morning in Estero. Mary was 18 years old and had just joined us this semester as a freshman. She was a recent graduate of Plant Senior High School, and had declared Legal Studies as her major at FGCU. Curtin told his lawyer he wouldn’t have let Taaffe drive if he’d known she was drunk. Curtin and his friends had arranged for a designated driver that night for themselves, in case they decided to leave their apartment.
