"Dear FGCU Students, Faculty and Staff,

I am saddened to inform you that FGCU student Mary Taaffe died as a result of injuries suffered in a single-car accident early this morning in Estero. Mary was 18 years old and had just joined us this semester as a freshman. She was a recent graduate of Plant Senior High School, and had declared Legal Studies as her major at FGCU.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Mary's family and friends during this very difficult and sad time.

Sincerely,
FGCU Interim President Dick Pegnetter"

Reported that Kevin Curtin believed that it was not his fault Mary Grace Taaffe got drunk that night in his apartment since she wasn’t invited to the party, although it was considered an “open house party.  Curtin told his lawyer he wouldn’t have let Taaffe drive if he’d known she was drunk.  Curtin and his friends had arranged for a designated driver that night for themselves, in case they decided to leave their apartment. Curtin maintained his innocence for the party, but is “very sorry this happened to the young lady.”
